Acarospora insolata occurs in sun or shade on natural siliceous rocks at a variety of elevations in Europe. In the Czech Republic, there are confirmed recent and historical records mostly from middle elevations. It has brown areoles with usually 3–10 punctiform apothecia less than 0.3 mm wide, hymenial gel dark blue (euamyloid) in Lugol’s, and broadly ellipsoid ascospores (more than 2 μm wide). It is a facultative, not obligatory, lichenicolous lichen, i.e. it can grow out of the thalli of other lichens especially after stealing their algae. Acarospora insolata is a complex of species in Europe and Asia, including some described taxa (several varieties, A. hospitans, A. hospitans form albomarginata, and A. tominiana) and needs a major revision in Czech Republic.
