An arctic-alpine lichen of exposed siliceous rocks, occurring in oceanic areas of Europe, Asia, and North America. In the mountains of central Europe, it is a relict species that has declined in the last decades. It used to occur also in the highest mountains of the Czech Republic in the past — in the Krkonoše Mountains (Mt Sněžka, Mt Vysoké kolo) and in the Hrubý Jeseník Mountains (Mt Praděd). However, its presence has not been confirmed recently.
