A species with smooth thallus, light-brown veins and pale rhizines. It usually occurs in grasslands, on soil or bryophytes, less often also on rocks or tree bases. The lichen is tolerant to both basic and acidic substrates in non-forest habitats or open forests. Peltigera hymenina is common in oceanic parts of Europe and in mountains. In the Czech Republic, the species is rather rare and its distribution is relatively poorly known. Recent reports come mainly from middle elevations and lower mountains of the country.
