This inconspicuous lichen is characterized by an areolate, grey-brown to dark brown thallus and the presence of stictic acid. It occurs on siliceous rocks in mountainous and boreal regions. In Central Europe, it is very rare, known from only a handful of localities. In the Czech Republic, R. gyrizans was first found in 2022 on the Kozí hřbety ridge in the Krkonoše Mountains, where it grew together with Lecidea lactea on quartzite rock.
