A Rinodina with a conspicuous grey areolate thallus and lecanorine apothecia that are partly immersed in the thallus. It has specific spores with two pigmented bands over the cell lumina (Bicinta type). The lichen occurs on exposed natural calcareous rocks, often on their tops at places eutrophicated with bird droppings. In Europe, it is widely distributed from the lowlands to the mountains, abundant mainly in the southern part. In the Czech Republic, it is common in the Pálava Hills and Český kras (the Bohemian karst) with single records from other limestone areas.
