This poorly known semilichens is characterized by black, sometimes slightly flattened pycnidia with a white “droplet” at the top, formed by a mass of conidia. It resembles very robust specimens of Micarea misella. The species is associated with algae of the genus Stichococcus, which usually form green patches around the pycnidia (Vondrák et al. 2023). The conidia measure 5–7 × 2.5–3 µm and have slightly pointed ends (Svensson et al. 2024). Sphaeronaema truncatum belongs to the subclass Ostropomycetidae (Vondrák et al. 2023).
It grows on moist decaying wood of conifers, only rarely also on deciduous wood. In the Czech Republic, it occurs in humid montane forests and raised bogs. So far, it has been collected in the Šumava Mountains, the Třeboň Basin, and the Novohradské hory Mountains (Vondrák et al. 2024). Its overall distribution is unknown.
