Thallus of this species is thin and membranous or thicker, cracked and areolate, grey to grey-brown, without a visible prothallus. Perithecia are completely or largely immersed in raised thalline warts and are often flattened at the top. Inside, muriform spores with a thicker outer wall are formed.
Thelenella modesta requires ample light and rather mild (subatlantic) climatic conditions. It grows on both smooth and rough bark of various deciduous trees (Aesculus, Corylus, Fraxinus, Juglans, Populus, Quercus) and occurs throughout most of Europe. In the Czech Republic, the species has been recorded only on Žižkův vrch hill near Mariánské Lázně, in the crown of a fallen ash, together with nitrophilous lichens such as Halecania viridescens, Lecania cyrtella, L. naegelii, etc. (Peksa et al. 2025).
