A conspicuous pendent epiphyte characterized by inflated and constricted thallus segments, no papillae on branches and the presence of fumarprotocetraric and protocetraric acids in the medulla. It is mainly an oceanic-subtropical species, with a Mediterranean-Macaronesian distribution and association with humid forests with old trees in Europe. Its presence in the Alps has been questioned (Nimis et al. 2018) and it is absent from northern Europe (Westberg et al. 2021). There are two historical published records from the Czech Republic: Mariánské Lázně and Boubín in the Šumava Mts (Bayer 1922, Keissler 1960 – the locality erroneously placed near Šumperk therein). Currently, it is considered extinct. However, considering its distribution range and possible misidentification, a revision of the herbarium material is necessary to confirm its historical presence in the country.
