The more abundant of the two arctic-boreal Arctoparmelia species. It is linked to exposed siliceous rocks and boulder screes, especially at higher elevations. At lower to middle elevation, it can be seen on sandstone rocks, rarely also on vulcanites. In the Czech Republic, beside its common presence in the sandstone rock towns, it sparsely occurs also in more elevated parts of the Český masiv (Bohemian Massif). In addition to Europe, it is distributed also across Asia and North America.
