Catinaria neuschildii is indistinguishable from the similar C. atropurpurea in the field, but it differs in the higher number (12–16) of ascospores in the ascus. The lichen occurs mainly on old deciduous trees with higher bark pH in boreal and mountain areas. It is a rare species in Europe and in the Czech Republic; only a few localities are known in the Šumava Mts.
