Cladonia brevis (Sandst.) Sandst.

Little known taxon with dominant primary squamules and, according to the original description (Sandstede 1931), with very short podetia (up to 1 cm). It was described from sandy soil in northern Germany where it was commonly accompanied by other Cladonia species with dominant primary thallus – C. cervicornis (Sandstede 1931). Cladonia brevis is similar to species from the C. cariosa group, which grow on basic substrates, but it contains psoromic acid. Phylogenetically, it is related to C. macrophylla with identical chemistry (Stenroos et al. 2019). According to Ahti & Stenroos (2013), most of C. brevis records from northern Europe actually belong to C. macrophylla.

In the Czech Republic, there were two historical records from the Beskydy Mts; localities Písková pod Ondřejníkem and Tížová, both near Frenštát pod Radhoštěm (Suza 1924). Because the taxonomic status of the species is not resolved, these records will require further studies.
