A member of the taxonomically difficult C. chlorophaea group. The species can be reliably identified based on secondary metabolites; merochlorophaeic acid is the diagnostic compound (KC+ red to violet and UV+ whitish). In the field, its presence might be estimated based on the common brownish colour of the podetia.
Cladonia merochlorophaea is a cosmopolitan species, abundant in Europe. In the Czech Republic, it grows all over the area from lowlands to mountains, in forest and open habitats. It is a generalist species considering substrate preferences; it occurs on soil, humus, decaying wood and tree bases.
