Cladonia scabriuscula is characterized by a disintegrating to pealing cortex in the apical parts of podetia where coarse soredia are also formed. It is the most similar and closely related to the common C. furcata. The two species are not distinguishable based on molecular data (Pino-Bodas et al. 2015).
It grows on acidic soil in open habitats and open forests. The species is rare in central Europe. Its distribution range has oceanic tendencies (Ahti & Stenroos 2013). In the Czech Republic, there are only very scattered records from the western part of the country, including a few recent findings.
