Little known “aquatic” lichen that forms olivaceous to dark brown slimy thalli with an unknown coccal cyanobacteria as a photobiont. Its dark perithecia are non-carbonized, without an involucrellum, partly covered by the thallus and contain richly branched anastomosed hamathecium and one-septate ascospores. The spores are narrower at one side, the two cells are of a different size (Nordin 2002).
C. angermannicum grows on often submerged siliceous rocks and stones in streams and lakes, probably enriched with bases. It often grows together with Ephebe lanata (Nordin 2002). Most of the so-far published records come from the British Isles and Scandinavia. It was discovered in the Czech Republic not long ago and has only been known from tree localities in glacial cirques in the Hrubý Jeseník Mts, Krkonoše Mts and from the valley of the Divoká Orlice River (Halda 2017).
Thüs & Schultz (2009) discussed the potential confusion with little known amphibious lichens with similar morphology and ecology that were circumscribed within the genus Pseudarthopyrenia by M. Servít from the area of the Czech Republic. In theory, they might be identical with C. angermannicum. However, a detailed revision of the Servít’s type material is necessary, especially considering the taxon P. bayeri (= Pyrenocollema bayeri), which is only known from the type locality near Chotěboř. According to the description, it differs in larger ascospores (Servít 1955).
