A facultatively lichenized species, forming a whitish thallus and tiny perithecia. It grows within nitrophilous lichen communities on deciduous trees with higher bark pH (such as Fraxinus and Populus). The species is widespread in Europe. Recently, L. atomaria has been reported from the confluence of the rivers Morava and Dyje, Český ráj region, the Rokycany and Sokolov regions. The species is probably more common but overlooked.
