This species was placed in the synonymy of the closely related L. elatina, from which it was only recently recognized. It differs in its thin, continuous to cracked-areolate thallus, and discrete soralia at least in young parts of thalli, which rarely fuse and are mostly convex.
It grows on various deciduous and coniferous trees in deciduous and mixed forests. The species is so far known only from Europe and its distribution is suboceanic. In the Czech Republic, it has so far been documented only from Betula pubescens in the Šumava Mts (Velká niva). It will probably be considerably rarer in the Czech Republic than L. elatina.
