A mainly saxicolous lichen, rarely growing also on tree bark and wood. It is distributed across Europe from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia. Most often, it is found on siliceous, sun-exposed rocks and stones at any elevation. The taxon used to be delimited broader in the past and included the now-recognised epiphytic M. glabratula. Therefore, the records from the Czech Republic need to be revised. M. fuliginosa differs from the above mentioned species by darker and browner thallus, rather narrower lobe margins without isidia and narrower lobes in general.
