A lichen of a similar appearance and ecology as the common P. rufescens from which it differs in pale and raised veins on the thallus underside. It prefers grasslands, such as pastures, steppy grasslands or in path surroundings, on basic substrates. The species is widespread in temperate to boreal zone of the northern hemisphere, but is common only locally. In central Europe, it is rarer or overlooked Peltigera species, as well as in the Czech Republic. There are only scattered records from the country.
