A sexually reproducing species, practically unmistakable thanks to its specific ecology. It grows on occasionally inundated siliceous rocks in streams and rivers. It prefers clean water currents in mountain or boreal areas. In central Europe, P. endococcina is relatively more abundant only in the Alps and the Carpathians, elsewhere, it is rare. In the Czech Republic, it is only known from isolated localities in the Krkonoše, Orlické hory and Šumava Mts and the Pošumaví region.
