Rinodinella controversa is a Mediterranean species, associated with exposed calcareous rock. In the Czech Republic, it was historically published only from Květnice near Tišnov (Kovář 1907), but the herbarium material has not been found. Specimens from the same locality collected by J. Suza and deposited in PRM were later revised and identified as Rinodina lecanorina (Malíček & Vondrák 2018). Its only recent occurrence is on limestone rocks on Děvín in the Pálava Hills.
