This macrolichen is an early colonizer of calcium-enriched soils. It requires occasional disturbances of natural or anthropogenic origin. In the Northern Hemisphere, and also in Europe, it is widely distributed but generally rare, more abundant only in the boreal zone and some high mountain ranges. It is very rare in the Czech Republic, recently only found in the Krkonoše Mts, Krušné hory Mts and near Tišnov. Historically, it also occurred in Šumava.
