Characterized by the absence of rhizines and usually pale grey, only slightly rugose upper surface. On siliceous rocks and stones, in open, slightly eutrophic places in the montane to alpine belt. In the Czech Republic, it was historically collected in the Šumava Mts (Hojsova Stráž), Českomoravska vysočina highlands (Řečice u Telče) and Jizerské hory Mts (Ořešník). Recently also found in screes on the Ralsko Hill.
