Grey to grey-brown, lower surface black with numerous dark rhizines. On siliceous and volcanic rocks, mainly on vertical surfaces. It prefers humid places with periodic seepage. Usually on well-lit habitats but also tolerates half-shaded sites. Not common in Central Europe. In the Czech Republic, known from various localities from middle to higher altitudes (mainly in the Šumava Mts and Northern Bohemia). Recent unpublished records are from Šumava, e. g. Plešné jezero corrie (Palice 1996).
