Little known Verrucaria, thallus distinctive, brown, more or less areolate, cracked near perithecia. Perithecia one half to two thirds immersed, ascospores 16–25(–27) × 8–10(–13) μm large (Krzewicka 2012). Common and similar * V. nigrescens* is distinguished by a black basal layer. Very similar to V. nigrofusca and V. fuscoatroides, which are considered synonymic (Krzewicka 2012) and we follow this taxonomic concept here. On calcareous rocks in open habitats. In the Czech Republic repeatedly recorded in the past (e.g. Servít 1954), recently only known from a couple of localities. Probably scattered and overlooked.
