Xanthomendoza huculica (S.Y. Kondr.) Diederich

Thallus yellow-orange, foliose, with marginal helmet-shaped soralia. Distinguished from similar X. fallax by the shape of soralia, shorter and wider lobes and more abundant rhizines. Apothecia rare. Epiphyte, in the Czech Republic mainly on old solitary deciduous trees along roads, in parks or castle gardens. It prefers nitrophilous communities, typically found on bark of ash trees. Previously recorded as X. fallax in the Czech Republic. Some authors (e. g. Lindblom et al. 2019) question X. huculica and do not distinguish it from the saxicolous X. fallax. According to our experience and data from central Europe, we differentiate both species based on minute, yet constant, ecological and morphological features.
