A rare representative of arctic-alpine terricolous fruticose lichens in the Czech Republic. In the country, the species was recorded only above the upper tree line in the Krkonoše Mountains (e.g. on Mt Sněžka) and in the Hrubý Jeseník Mts in sparse tundra vegetation and among stones in screes in the past. Recently, it has been known to occur only on Mt Sněžka. The overall range of the lichen is almost cosmopolitan, it is absent only in Africa. Alectoria nigricans differs from other genus members in its grey-brown to grey-black colour, chemistry and also DNA, and therefore it has recently been allocated in the genus Gowardia (Halonen et al. 2009). However, this split is not supported by many authors due to the short time in which it probably occurred (e.g. Divakar et al. 2017).
