An inconspicuous, ephemeral microlichen with an endoxylic thallus composed of scattered goniocysts beneath the ascomata. The apothecia are white to pale beige, translucent when wet, convex, 0.1–0.5 mm in diameter. The asci are polysporous, thick-walled, and surrounded by a massive amyloid gelatinous sheath. The ascospores are globose, 1.5–3.0 µm in diameter.
It grows on soft rotten or hard wood (with weathered surface) of conifers (stump, log) in microsites rather sheltered from rain. The species was described only in 2024 and is currently known from just three localities: the Šumava Mountains (Skalní hora, Mrtvý luh) and the Novohradské hory Mountains (Žofínský prales). According to environmental DNA data, B. ligni-putridi is more widespread, mainly in submontane areas.
