A saxicolous lichen with an immersed, less developed thallus and prominent yellow apothecia. Candelariella aurella belongs to common species on calcareous substrates at any elevation. It is abundant on concrete, plaster, limestone rocks, etc. It is one of the fast colonizers of new substrates even in early succession stages (r-strategy). This nearly cosmopolitan species is common in Europe as well as in the Czech Republic. When growing on atypical substrates, it may be mistaken for C. vitellina, which, however, usually has areolate or squamulose thallus.
