It is a relatively rare species, typically growing on vertical shaded limestones, predominantly on dolomites. Poelt (1969) considers it as primarily mountain species that reaches alpine zones. However, from the Czech Republic, it is known only from two, less elevated Moravian limestone areas, from the Pálava Hill and from Květnice near Tišnov (Vězda 1958). Its occurrence in the country has not been confirmed recently.
