A relatively common and very variable lichen with a wide ecological amplitude. It grows on a broad scale of both inorganic and organic substrates in rather moist, shaded habitats, usually in moist forests. In the Czech Republic, most records come from higher elevations. At lower elevations, the lichen prefers valleys and inverse ravines. It is widespread in the country, but usually absent in intensively managed regions.
