A species that prefers nutrient-rich, high pH bark of deciduous wooden plants. Typically, it is found in open landscape on sunny solitary trees or in avenues. However, it can grow also in open forests and even on calcareous rock substrates, such as limestone overhangs. The lichen is widespread in Europe. In the Czech Republic, it occurs in most of the area, but relatively sparsely, being more abundant only locally.
