A saxicolous species that grows on calcareous rocks. It is an easily confusable taxon, known so far only from Europe and North America. In Europe, most data come from the Alps. In the Czech Republic, it has been found only in a single locality in the Český kras (Czech Karst), on sun-exposed xerothermic diabase rocks.
