A species related to P. caesia, distinguished by marginal soralia. It is only regarded at the level of a form by some authors, but molecular data indicate distinction of the two species. It is also similar to P. dubia and P. tribacia from which it differs in atranorin content in the medulla, white spots on the surface and sometimes also in blueish soralia.
In the Czech Republic, P. subalbinea is probably uncommon at lower and middle elevations, locally can also be found at higher elevations. It seems to prefer basic silicates or extrusive rocks and occurs on serpentinite as well. Its European distribution is little known.
