Pseudoschismatomma rufescens grows on deciduous trees with mildly acidic to subneutral bark pH. It occurs in various forest types from lowlands to mountains. It prefers natural and older forests, but also occurs on trees along roads, in orchards or on solitary trees. The species is widely distributed, but scattered both in the Czech Republic and in Europe. It is rare in the northern part of Bohemia due to the past substrate acidification. It is also absent from intensively used agricultural landscapes and highly eutrophic places.
