Ramalina calicaris has characteristic narrow channelled lobes. Some pendent forms of the more common R. fastigiata may look very similar, so verification of the identification by TLC is recommended.
The species typically grows on branches of deciduous trees with higher bark pH. It grows on natural and old-growth forests, but also on trees in parkland landscape. It prefers humid areas without air pollution. In central Europe, R. calicaris is currently very rare, found in submontane and montane areas. In the Czech Republic, it has not been recorded recently. Revision of herbarium material is necessary to evaluate its historical occurrence here.
