The only European epiphytic species of the genus. It usually forms sterile sorediate crusts amongst other crustose lichens. It grows in humid mountain forests. In the Czech Republic, this relatively rare boreal lichen is only known from a couple of localities of higher elevation in the Šumava Mts, where it was collected from the sycamore bark (Palice et al. 2018). Brown soralia and the content of gyrophoric and 5-O-methylhiasic acids are diagnostic. A chemical analysis is necessary for reliable identification.
