Schaereria fuscocinerea (Nyl.) Clauzade & Cl. Roux

A conspicuous dark saxicolous crustose lichen, which is very variable, but the content of gyrophoric acid is diagnostic. It occurs on siliceous substrates with high Si content, preferring hard rocks, such as granites and gneisses, in open habitats, such as rock outcrops and boulder screes. Together with Rhizocarpon species it dominates the lichen communities of some screes and top parts of the Krkonoše Mts. In the Czech Republic, S. fuscocinerea grows in all the higher mountains. On suitable stands, it can also be found at middle elevations, e.g., in the Brdy hills.
