Stereocaulon dactylophyllum is characterized by branched coralloid phyllocladia and the production of stictic acid (Pd+ orange). It is saxicolous, mainly on silicates on both natural and anthropogenic stands, often enriched with metals. The lichen is widely distributed on the northern hemisphere. In the Czech Republic, it is one of the most common Stereocaulon species, mainly found in montane and submontane areas.
