Verrucaria bulgarica Szatala

A little-known and very inconspicuous Verrucaria species characterized by very small ascospores (8–9.5 × 4.5–5 µm), an involucrellum reaching down to the base of the fruiting body, and a thin thallus. Such small spores are rare within the genus and also occur, for example, in V. aquatilis and V. simplex.

It grows on natural as well as anthropogenic calcareous substrates in woodland. The species was described from Bulgaria and was later reported from Great Britain (Orange 2013). In the Czech Republic, it was first found only in 2022 in Drbákov–Albertovy skály in the Middle Vltava region. There the lichen occurs in a scree woodland on occasionally moistened volcanic rock that is strongly enriched with calcium. Nearby, species such as Protoblastenia rupestris and Verrucaria muralis also occur.
