Carbonea vorticosa is a clearly lichenized and non-lichenicolous species of the genus. It is characterized by a whitish to grey crustose thallus and black lecideine apothecia with blue-green epihymenium, dark hypothecium and completely brown-black excipulum in a cross section. It is an arctic-alpine species growing on various types of basic silicates (e.g., slates, gneiss, basalt), rarely also on dolomite, at higher elevations. In the Czech Republic, there are a few historical records and only a couple of recent localities. The species requires revision and name typification (Svensson & Owe-Larsson 2021).
