A lichen, which is hard to recognize and is very often confused with the common species L. expallens or with other similar, predominantly sterile lichens. It can typically be found on Quercussp. in well-lit forests and an open countryside, where it nevertheless avoids eutrophic sites. It grows at lower and middle elevations. The species is abundant in the oceanic part of Europe. In the Czech Republic, it is rare and reliably documented from only a few sites.
